-industries such as steel, cement, chemicals and aluminum account for around a quarter of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. To help clean them up, the Biden administration announced it would spend $6 billion on new technologies that could drastically reduce these industrial emissions. Funding from the Ministry of Energy.

Ørsted in line for support in USD 6bn push

The US government will provide 6 bn dollar in funding for projects that will help the climate and secure American jobs. Ørsted is ”thrilled” to have methanol project included.

While the development of green hydrogen is slow in Europe, Ørsted can at least see momentum in the US. The Danish energy company’s emethanol project in the Gulf of Mexico, Project Star, is among 33 projects selected by the US government to receive funding of up to nearly USD 6bn (DKK 41bn). Ørsted’s Texas project could receive USD 100m (DKK 689m) in funding.

“The production of e-methanol will be critical to achieving rapid decarbonization for the most hard-to-electrify sectors, and we are thrilled to have the U.S. Department of Energy’s support to develop and scale this new industry,” said Melissa Peterson, Ørsted’s Head of Onshore and PTX at Amercas, in a statement.

“Beyond decarbonization, Ørsted’s investments in Texas and in the e-fuels industry will create new American jobs and deliver economic value and benefits to local communities.”

The HiP project and the objective

•Sustainable fuel for industrial sectors (factories, maritime vessels, aviation, heavy trucks, cars)

•Infrastructure and power plants

•Hydrogen for electricity production

•Decarbonisation for the cement and coal industry

•Absorb CO2 in the process

•Produce H2 under $0.95 DKK 6.00 low cost production

•Save 8.4 billion danish tax kroner on burying CO2.

•Make money from CO2 as a material and avoid high CO2 taxes. Circular economy.

•Export to Germany and EU, World.

Largest investment ever

These are the two pillars of the generous US support: energy transition and job creation in the US. The money that Ørsted and the other selected companies will now negotiate with the US government comes from the two transformative aid packages the US government has put in place under the current president, the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Act of 2021.

”Thanks to President Biden’s industrial strategy, DOE is making the largest investment in industrial decarbonization in the history of the United States. These investments will slash emissions from these difficult-to-decarbonize sectors and ensure American businesses and American workers remain at the forefront of the global economy,” says Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

One of the industries that is difficult to wean off fossil fuels is the shipping industry. That’s what Ørsted’s US project is targeting, at least initially; in the spring of 2022, the energy company announced its intention to establish a PTX project on the Texas coast as part of its agreement with Maersk to supply fuel for 12 methanol-fuelled container ships.

We Hydrogenerous need only $6 Million to finish 10 years of investments, and the world is ready to get zero-net Hydrogen under $0,95 and plenty of it.
